Wapak Kids Finish Out Season at OAC State: Erb and Jackson Place
Fifteen Wapakoneta Wrestlers wrapped up their season this weekend in Youngstown at the Ohio Athletic Committee's Grade School State Tournament. Hope Erb turned in the highest placement for the Skins. She placed 4th in the Girls-D2 108lb weight class. JJ Jackson, competing under the Collin Palmer Wrestling Academy, also made it to the podium turning in a 5th place finish in the Boys-D4 80lb class. Erb went 3-2 on the day with a fall and and a pair of decisions. Her semifinal loss came at the hands of eventual champion, Jade Adkins of Harrison who pinned her way through the field. Adkins, a sixth grader, placed 4th in last week’s OAC Girls Junior High Tournament. Sixth graders may participate in both the Grade School and Junior High OAC tournaments.
Going 4-2 on the weekend, Jackson tallied a tech-fall, a decision, and a pin before dropping his semifinal match to the eventual champion, and the consolation semifinal match. In his match for 5th place, JJ scored the takedown in sudden victory overtime to win by 7-4 decision.
Other Wapak boys competing were Jaxson Follin (D1-45lbs 0-2), Wyatt Follin (D2-50lbs), Mylan Webb (D2-50lbs 2-2), Eli Erb (D2-58lbs) 0-2, Zane Allison (D2-65lbs 1-2), Drexler Dobie (D2-70lbs 1-2), Titus Follin (D3-60lbs 0-), Hunter Stidam (D4-80lbs 1-2), Asher Miller (D4-95lbs 3-2), Dorrian Varno (D4-120lbs 0-2), and Landen Friemoth (D4-130lbs -2). In addition to Erb, other female Wapak Wrestlers were Mia Bailey (D1-44lbs 2-2) and Millie Sells (D2-65lbs 1-2).​​​

Mendez 3rd, Ridenour 4th at OHWAY State Tournament
OHSAA State Tournament qualifiers Gavin Ridenour and Keyno Mendez competed in the Ohio Wrestling Association for Youth State Tournament held at the Marion County fairgrounds. Mendez turned in a 3rd place finish going 4-1 on the day. Ridnehour ended the day 6-2 enroute to a 4th place finish.

Mendez Wins Freshman State
A dozen junior high Wrestlers competed this past weekend in the Ohio Athletic Committee's Junior High State Tournament. Six boys and six girls took to the mats with the boys competing both Saturday and Sunday, and the girls on Sunday only. Eighth graders Crue Shaner and Channing Miller each ended the weekend on the podium.
Shaner made it back-to-back OAC State placements. As a seventh grader, Crue placed 8th in the 74lb weight class. This year in the 84lb weight class, he moved up two steps on the podium on his way to a 6th place finish. Crue finished the weekend with a 5-3 record. His three losses came at the hands of the the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers.
Miller, who won four matches at last year's tournament, did not let this season's opportunity go to waste. After an opening round bye, he rattled off three consecutive wins, two by tech-fall. Leading 11-8 in his semifinal match, he was caught in a roll thru for a fall to eventual champion John Adams. Miller bounced back with a major decison in his consolation semifinal match. In his finals match, after a scoreless sudden victory overtime, Miller rode out Avery Conroy of Streetsboro 5-4 in the overtime tiebreaker to wrap up 3rd place.
Other Wapakoneta Wrestlers competing were Bennett Bishop, 1-2 at 90lbs, Asher Miller, 0-2 at 96lbs, Cooper Cecil, 2-2 at 120lbs and Darrian Steinbrunner, 2-2 at 132lbs.
On the girls side, Kenize Jackson went 3-2 and missed placement by just one match. Her two losses were to the eventual champion and 3rd Place finishers. She won two matches by decision and one by tech-fall. Also competing for the girls were Bailey Koenig, Brielle Bowers, Brooke Page, Rhilynne Watson, and Carmin Wibley.
Mendez Wins Freshman State
Wapak's Keyno Mendez won the 159lb eight class on Saturday at the OAC Freshman State Tournament. The previous weekend, the freshman competed in the OHSAA State tournament at 150lbs. In the OAC tournament, after a first round bye, Keyno went 4-0 with a decision, a pair of tech-falls and a pin.
Versailles' Kaiser Places Third
Ben Kaiser of Versailles placed third in the 209lb weight class. The 8th grader went 5-1 on the weekend with a pair of pins. His only loss was to the eventual champion Jason Forte of Elder.

Russell and Mellott Make it Onto the Podium
Junior Zane Russell (106) and Senior Caden Mellott (120) each Wrestled their way to the third day of the OHSAA State Tournament and ended up on the podium. The sophomore Russell went 3-2 on his way to a 4th place finish. He lost his semi-finals match to eventual Runner-up Rayce Watson of Jonathan Alder before defeating Anthony Bergeron of Granville in the consolation semifinals in a repeat of last week's district finals match. He dropped his final match 6-2 to senior Justuce Fisher of Beaver Local.
Senior Caden Mellott made his second trip up the podium with a 6th place finish at 120lbs. The ONU bound Wrestler went 3-3 on the weekend losing to eventual Champion Maddox Laymon of Sheridan and 3rd place finisher Josh Sheets of Columbus Desales. In his 5th place match, Mellott fell to Wauseon's Carter Stuckey 7-6.
Juniors Gavin Ridenour and Wyatt Buell each qualified for the State Tournament but did not place. Freshman Keyno Mendez also qualified but dropped both of his State matches. Buell, making his second State appearance, suffered and injury in his first-round loss and forfeited his second-round matchup. Ridenour won his opening match by an 8-6 decision before falling to eventual Runner-up Blake Bartos by fall. In his consolation match, the junior fell to 6th place finisher Luke Stanley of Marlington 5-3.
Kessen is Delphos Saint John's First State Champion
Junior Edward Kessen brought the St. John's Blue Jays their first Wrestling title when he won the divison 3 138lb weight class. Kessen defeated Lima Central Catholic's Antwain Adams in the final by a 7-6 decision. Sunday's match marked the third weekend in a row that the two faced each other in the Championship match. Kessen defeated Adams at the sectional tournament, as well as the district tournament.
Roughrider's Hisey Repeats as State Champion
Saint Marys Memorial's Tate Hisey knocked off presumptive favorite Blake Bartos of Medina Buckeye to make it back-to-back State Titles for the 132lb senior. Hisey wrapped up his senior campaign with a 40-3 record and will continue his Wrestling career at George Mason University.

Indian Lake Puts Trio into Finals
Three Indian Lake Wrestlers advanced to Sunday's Championship Match with all three finishing as Runner-up. At 215lbs, senior Owen Pummel wrapped up a stellar career with a 2nd place finish. Juniors Chris Timms (285) placed 2nd for the Lakers men, and Maddie Miller (235) placed Runner-up for the Lakers ladies Team.
Area Wrestlers Finish on Podium
Several other area grapplers Wrestled their way to a top eight finish and a spot on the podium. Versailles brothers Trent (106) and Trey (113) Huber each turned in strong performances over the three-day tournament. Trent took 8th place while Trey finished in 4th. Corbin Kimmel of Wayne Trace notched a 7th place finish in the Division 3 120lb weight class. LCC had a pair of finalists with Antwain Adams (138) finishing Runner-up and Jordan Neal bringing home the top spot at 144lbs. Thor Etter (144) of Paulding finished in 3rd, and Saint Marys Memorial senior Bo Hertenstein wrapped up his high School career with a 4th place finish at 157.

Redskins Qualify Five for State; Teams Places Runner-up
Five Redskin Wrestlers punched their tickets to the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament by placing in the top four at the DII Norwalk District. Zane Russell (106) and Keyno Mendez (150) were each crowned Champion going 4-0 on the day.​ Senior Caden Mellott, along with juniors Gavin Ridneour, and Wyatt Buell, all finished in third place. The five State Qualifiers ties the Team record set in 1999. The State Tournament is March 7-9 in Columbus at the Schottenstein Center.

MS Wrestlers Win OAC State Duals Title
The middle school Wrestlers competed at the Ohio Athletic Committee's Division II State Duals at Olentangy High School Sunday. The Redskins finished the day 5-0 and were crowned Team Champions. Winning all five of their matches on the day were Fisher Montgomery, Romeo Simmons, and Trey Williams. Going 4-1 on the day were Cruz Mendez, Cooper Cecil, Channing Miller, Trevor Varno, Andre Varno, Caleb Pulfer, and Hank Walters.​ Complete Results

Lawrence Advances to District
Wapakoneta's Eliza Lawrence placed 3rd at Friday's Findlay Sectional, and in doing so, became the school's first female District Qualifier Wrestler. The sophomore 115 pounder, went 3-1 on the day with a pin and a pair of tech-falls to qualify for next week's District tournament which will also be held at Findlay. Freshman Maci Neumeier and and junior Ella Ridenour finished 6th. Also competing for the Redskins were freshmen Kelsey Greve and Skylar Good.
As a Team, Wapakoneta finished 11th in the 25 Team field.

Junior High Boys Qualify Five for OAC State Tournament

Redskins Looking for Outright WBL Title
​Having closed out the dual meet portion of the Western Buckeye League season with an impressive 9-0 record, Wapakoneta heads into Saturday's WBL team tournament looking for an outright league title. Wrestlers Finish WBL Dual Meet Season at 9-0
The varsity Wrestlers wrapped up the dual meet portion of the WBL season Thursday by defeating Bath 62-5. The win moved the grapplers to 9-0 in the league with just the WBL Tournament remaining.​ The Redskins will look to win their 20th WBL Title this Saturday at the WBL Team Tournament at Ottawa Glandorf. The MS boys Wrestling Team was crowned Champion at the inaugural Defiance Tri-State Border War Middle School Duals. The Wrestlers defeated Berkshire (IN), Anthony Wayne, Ayersville, and Napoleon in pool action before defeating Celina in the Championship Match.

Versailles Runs Away with Elida Title: Skins Distant Second
Versailles ran away with the 21-Team Elida Invitational Team Championship. The Tigers' top to bottom depth of their lineup saw them place all fourteen of their Wrestlers, including putting eleven into the championship match. Versailles ended the day with seven Champions.

Wapakoneta mustered 232.5 point compared to Versailles 311 to finish as Team runner-up. The Redskins placed eleven of their fourteen Wrestlers. They put five into the championship matches with four coming away victorious. Individual Champions included Crue Shaner (92lbs), Cooper Cecil (122lbs), Darrian Steinbrunner (128lbs) and Channing Miller (150lbs). Finishing Runner up was Trevor Varno (160lbs). Isaiah Whetstone finished third at 86lbs. Fourth place finished were turned in by Bennet Bishop (98lbs), Trey Williams (142lbs), Andre Varno (172lbs), and Hank Walters (245lbs). Warren Rivera (205lbs) finished sixth.​

The HS and MS will close out their home season with Senior Night this Thursday against Elida.

Another Busy Weekend: Varsity Wins Raider Invitational
Week 8 of competition has wrapped and multiple Redskins found their way to the podium.

The Varsity grapplers competed Saturday at the 21 Team Ben Logan Raider Invitational, and walked away with the Championship trophy. The Redskins Place ten of their eleven competitors.
Freshman Keyno Mendez was selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after pinning returning State Qualifier Braydon Cox of Kenton Ridge to win the 157lb weight class. Other Placers included Champions Zane Russell (106lbs), Urijah Cordray (113lbs), Caden Mellott (126lbs), and Wyatt Buell (175lbs). Runner-up performances were turned in by Gavin Ridenour (132lbs), Lane Fisher (138lbs), and Dawson Ware (165lbs). Gauge Vaughn (144lbs) finished 4th and Johnny Carnes (285lbs) finished in 5th place. The MS boys were a late add to the Friday night Ben Logan Raider Invitational. The MS matmen placed 4th in the 11 Team field. Seven Wrestlers competed, and all seven made the finals. Finishing as Champions were Bennett Bishop (92lbs), Cooper Cecil (122lbs), Darrian Steinbrunner (128lbs), and Channing Miller (150lbs). Wrestlers Remain Undefeated in WBL: Knock off Shawnee
The Wrestlers traveled to Shawnee Thursday night and handled business to remain atop the Western Buckeye League standings. The Varsity Wrestlers defeated the host Indians 63-17. The middle school Wrestlers opened the night in similar fashion with a 57-21 victory.
The HS girls will compete Friday & Saturday at the Iron Maiden Tournament in Bellefontaine. The MS girls will compete Saturday at the Iron Maiden. The MS boys will compete Friday at the Ben Logan Raider MS Invitational. Wrestlers Wrap Up Busy Weekend on the Mat
All Redskin Wrestlers were in action this weekend with many turning in impressive performances and all gaining valuable mat time and experience.

The HS and MS girls competed in their first tournament of the season. Eleven Wrestlers took to the mat and three ended up on the podium. Brielle Bowers finished the day 4-2 to take 5th place. Kenzie Jackson went 3-1 to take 3rd, and Carmin Wibley went 4-1 to finish Runner-up.

The Varsity opened day 2 of the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals by losing a tough 36-30 match to Versailles. Following the loss, they bounced back to win their next 4 matches. They completed the two day tournament with an 8-1 record, good enough for a Team Runner-up finish. Caden Mellott, Gavin Ridenour, Keyno Mendez, and Wyatt Buell all completed the weekend undefeated. Varsity Finishes Day 1 of Gold Medal Duals Undefeated
The varsity Wrestlers went 4-0 on the opening day of the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. The Redskins defeated Napoleon 42-31, Genoa 44-26, Tiffin Columbian 59-24, and WBL foe Defiance 48-34.
On Saturday, the Redskins will face off against Versailles, Normandy, Bucyrus, Westerville Central, and Rossford.

Wrestlers Defeat Van Wert
The Wapak Wrestling Teams traveled to Van Wert Thursday and came home with another WBL dual meet victory. The high school defeated the Cougars 54-15, while the middle school grapplers cruised to a 65-23 win.
The varsity boys Wrestlers will be in action Friday and Saturday at the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. The Middle School boys will be at Shawnee Saturday for the Junior High Wrestling Championships. Both the high school and middle school lady Wrestlers will compete in a tournament at Patrick Henry on Saturday.

Redskins Remain Atop Lima Area Rankings
The second Lima Area Wrestling Rankings of the season have been published and the Redskins remain ranked as the number one Team in the area. Sophomore Zane Russell (106), Senior Caden Mellott (120), Junior Gavin Ridenour (132), and Junior Wyatt Buell (175) all remain at the top of their respective weight class. Moving into the top position at 150 is Freshman Keyno Mendez. Other ranked Redskin Wrestlers include Brody Bishop (113), Carson Pummell (126), and Dawson Ware (165). In the girl's rankings, Wapak's Ella Ridenour enters in at 235.

Buell Picks Up Win #100
On Thursday, Redskin junior Wyatt Buell joined elite company by securing his 100th varsity win. In doing so, he becomes the 18th Wapak Wrestler to eclipse the century mark. The returning State Qualifier defeated state ranked Cole Donovan of Saint Marys 4-0 to surpass the 100 win mark. ​​

Redskins Advance to 4-0 in WBL
The Wapakoneta Varsity Wrestlers knocked off St. Marys Thursday night 49-23. The win, coupled with a Shawnee loss to Celina, puts the Redskins atop the WBL standings as the only undefeated league team. The Middle School Wrestlers defeated the Roughriders 32-3.
The MS Wrestlers will be at St. Paris Graham for the Best of the Midwest Tournament.

Redskins Set to Square-off with Roughriders on Alumni Night
This Thursday the Redskins are hosting the Roughriders from Saint Marys and are asking all Wapak Wrestling Alumni to come out and show their support for the program.
Wapak comes into the dual with a 3-0 record in the WBL, while Saint Marys is 1-2 in duals and cannot afford to lose another one if they look to claim a WBL title this season.
The Roughriders are led by the senior duo of returning State Champion Tate Hisey and State Runner-up Bo Hertenstein. The roster also includes state ranked Wrestlers in 175lb senior Cole Donovan and 285lb junior Matt Murray as well as three WBL Placers from last season.

The Versailles Tigers finished Saturday at the top of the 17 Team standings of the Wapakoneta Middle School Invitational Wrestling tournament. The host Redskins matched the Versailles four individual Champions, but the Tigers top to bottom strength pushed them to a nearly 60 point advantage.
Individual Redskin Champions included Crue Shaner (86lbs), Bennett Bishop (92lbs), Darrian Steinbrunner (128lbs) and Channing Miller (150lbs). A pair of Wapak Wrestlers finished Runner-up. Cooper Cecil (122lbs) and Trey Williams (142lbs) each dropped hard fought matches to finish in second place. Other Redskin place winners include Ned Ruck (5th, 86lbs), Mack Wibley (4th, 98lbs), Joey Borroff (5th, 104 lbs), Ian Garcia Brown (6th, 134lbs), Connor Howe (6th, 142lbs), Alton Spangler (6th, 150lbs), Trevor Varno (3rd, 160 lbs), Andre Varno (4th, 172lbs), and Hank Walters (4th 245lbs)

Four Redskins Sit Atop First Lima Area Rankings
The first day of the new year has brought with it the first Lima Area Wrestling Rankings. Four Redskins currently sit in the top spot of their respective weight class with another four finding themselves ranked. 106lb sophomore Zane Russell, 120lb senior Caden Mellott, 132lb junior Gavin Ridenour, and 175lb junior Wyatt Buell all are considered the top Wrestler at their weight by the ranking prognosticators. Also cracking the initial rankings were 113lb freshman Brody Bishop, 126lb sophomore Carson Pummell, 150lb freshman Gauge Vaughn, and 190lb senior Dawson Ware. Wapakoneta is ranked as the top area Team, followed by Versailles and Defiance.

MS Wrestlers Finish 5th at Bucyrus
The middle school Wrestlers finished 5th at the 3rd annual Bucyrus Invitational Tournament. Leading the way for the Redskins with runner-up finishes were 7th graders Isaiah Whetstone (86lbs) and Andre Varno (172lbs). Other Wapak Placers were Mack Wibley (3rd, 98lbs), Joey Boroff (6th, 104lbs), Zach Williams (6th, 110lbs), BJ Akilang (5th, 116lbs), Elijah Essex (6th, 116lbs), Henry Martin (3rd, 128lbs), Connor Howe (3rd, 142lbs), Alton Spangler (5th, 150lbs), Andrew Stoneburner (6th, 150lbs), and Hank Walters (5th, 245lbs).

MS Wrestlers Bring Home Championship From Clyde
The middle school Wrestlers sent a contingent to the Larry Norman Memorial Invitational in Clyde and brought home a Redskin Team championship. Wapakoneta pulled out to a lead in the semifinal round and finished ahead of runner-up McPherson MS (Clyde). The Redskins placed ten Wrestlers enroute to the tournament title.

Winning individual championships for the Skins were Crue Shaner at 86lbs, Cooper Cecil at 122, lbs, Darrian Steinbrunner at 134lbs, Channing Miller at 150lbs, and Andre Varno at 172lbs. Runner-up finishes were turned in by Bennett Bishop at 92lbs, Trey Williams at 142lbs, and Trevor Varno at 160lbs. Hank Walters turned in an impressive third place finish at 245lbs and Alton Spangler finished sixth at 150lbs.

Wrestlers Defeat Defiance in WBL Showdown
Looking to stay atop the WBL standings, the Wapak Wrestlers traveled to Defiance and handled business defeating the Bulldogs 42-30. The Redskins improve to 2-0 in league duals while Defiance drops to 1-1. The middle school Wrestlers continued their winning ways with a 60-23 win.

Redskins Advance to 3-0 in Duals; Defeat Indian Lake & Sidney
The varsity Wrestling team secured two more dual meet victories Thursday heading up to their Thursday Western Buckeye League showdown in Defiance against the Bulldogs. The Redskins defeated Indian Lake 52-20 and Sidney 50-25.
The middle school Wrestlers kept pace with the high school as they defeated the Lakers 61-15 and the Yellow Jackets 55-30.
Both teams travel to Defiance Thursday with middle school action starting at 5:00.

Redskins Finish 5th at 16 Team Firebird Classic
Shorthanded, the varsity Wrestlers traveled to Kettering and came away with a 5th place team finish at the Firebird Classic. Senior Caden Mellot (126lbs) brought home the lone individual championship, while junior Wyatt Buell (175lbs) finished runner-up. Other placers included sophomore Zane Russell third at 106lbs, freshman Brody Bishop 4th at 113lbs, and Sophomore Urijah Corday 5th at 120lbs.

Redskins Set to Host Celina in Season Opener
Come out Thursday to show your support for your Redskin Wrestlers as they host the Bulldogs of Celina in the season opener for each team. There will be plenty of action as the middle school Wrestlers will open up on mat 1 at 5pm, while the JV will start Wrestling on mat 2 at 6pm. Both will be followed by the varsity at approximately 7pm.

Orders should be available prior to Christmas. Pick up will be available at the Dan Davies Wrestling Complex unless otherwise coordinated through Lima Sporting Goods. When purchases arrive, it will be posted on this website and social media platforms.
Today kicked off the 24-25 Wrestling season. Both the high school and middle school Wrestlers set foot on the mats today for their first official practice of the season. Wapak Kids Wrestlers have their first practice on the 19th. Numbers are trending upward at all three levels of Wrestling which shows the overall health and strength of the program, as well as support from the community. The number of female Wrestlers is growing exponentially, and it is only a matter of time before we see a recognized all ladies Wrestling squad. The first match of the season is currently scheduled as home WBL dual meet with Celina on December 5th. That match may be rescheduled due to the football team competing 3 weeks into the post season.

June 29th: One Day Camp at the Wrestling Complex
Wapak Wrestlers in grades 3-12, or with at least one year experience, are invited to attend a one day camp on June 29th at the Dan Davies Wrestling Complex. The featured clinician will be 3X Ohio Northern All-American Jacob Reed. He will be assisted by a handful of current Ohio Northern wrestlers.

There will be two sessions 9-11am and 12-1pm. Cost is just $10 and may be paid at the door during registration. Pack a lunch to eat between sessions.

Wapak Wrestlers Putting in Extra Mat Time
While the high school, junior high, and Wapak Kids regular season matches came to an end about a month ago, there is no shortage of Wapakoneta Wrestlers setting their sights on next season and putting in the extra work that makes Champions. Several wrestlers have been wrestling in open tournaments, hitting open mats, and practicing with high end wrestling clubs like Beast Mode, CPWA and Conquest Wrestling.
Just a small sample of the many Wapak Wrestlers who competed in the 16th Annual Wrestle Against Autism Tournament in Urbana today.
Crue Shaner placed first at the Spatola Classic on March 30th.

Junior High Wrestlers Compete at OAC State: Shaner Places 8th
Eight Wapak Middle School Wrestlers wrapped up their season this weekend in Youngstown. Of those that had qualified for the Ohio Athletic Committee State Tournament, seventh grader, Crue Shaner, came away with the top Redskin finish by placing 8th in the 74lb weight class. Shaner dropped his opening match but bounced back to reel off four straight wins to secure his spot on the podium. Congratulations to all of the Redskins who qualified and competed against the best junior high wrestlers in the state.

Jace Knous, Division II State Runner-up
Redskin Senior Jace Knous closed out a stellar senior season campaign in impressive fashion this weekend by finishing runner-up in the 215lb Division II State Championship finals. After winning three consecutive bouts, Knous squared off against Columbus St. Francis Desales senior Max Shulaw. Shulaw, a Virginia wrestling commit, came into the match as a three-time state placer, two-time finalist, and as the defending State Champion sporting a a 48-1 record. Trailing just 2-0 after the first period, Knous was unable to escape Shulaw's leg ride and lost by fall midway through the second period.Knous finished the season with a 34-4 record. Last season Knous finished 7th at 190lbs.
Roughriders Get First State Champion
Saint Marys junior Tate Hisey pinned Indian Valley's Leroy Steagall three minutes into the 126lb finals match to become the Roughriders first State Champion. Hisey finished the season with a 44-2 record. Teammate Bo Hertenstein came up just short in his Championship match, losing a hard fought battle with Steubenville's Brody Saccoccia 13-9. He finished his junior season 40-4.

Area Wrestlers Finish on Podium
Several other area grapplers wrestled their way to a top eight finish and a spot on the podium. Mason Ducat of Defiance finished 8th at 132lbs, Delphos St. John's Edward Kessen finished 7th at 138lbs, Allen East freshman Jordan Neal placed 5th at 144lbs, and Celina's Zach Greber finished 7th at 144lbs.

Knous to Wrestle for Championship; Two Roughriders in Finals
Wapakoneta Senior Jace Knous won his quarterfinal and semi-final match on Saturday to advance to Sunday's 215lb Division II State Championship match. Knous's defeated Clinton Massie's Elijah Grow by tech-fall in the quarterfinal round. His semifinal match was more challenging as he needed a late takedown and back points to knock off Chardon's Bryce Wheatley 12-8 securing his finals match. Knous will face Columbus Saint Francis Desales senior Max Shulaw in the Championship match. Sophomore Wyatt Buell dropped his quarterfinal match to Woodridge Senior Steven Duffy by a score of 7-3. Duffy advanced to the Championship match. In his consolation match, Buell lost to Beaver Local senior Gabe Morgan via 5-2 decision.

Saint Marys juniors Tate Hisey and Bo Hertenstein each advanced to the Championship match, giving the Western Buckeye League an impressive showing. Hisey, 126lbs, defeated Logan Elm junior Gavin Hoover by a 2-1 decision before knocking off Louisville senior Kolten Barker by a score of 5-3. He will face Indian Valley senior Leroy Steagall in the finals. Hertenstein, 144lbs, knocked off Luke Kaiser of Athens 8-3 in the quarters, and beat Braxden Martin of Sandusky Perkins 5-0 to earn his spot in the Championship. He will square up against Steubenville junior Brody Saccoccia for a shot at a State Championship.

Other area wrestlers advancing to the placement matches in Division II include Celina's Zach Greber, 144lbs, and Defiance junior Mason Ducat, 132lbs, who will wrestle for 7th place. In Division III, Allen East freshman Jordan Neal, 144lbs, is wrestling in the consolation semifinals and can finish no worse than 6th place. Saint John sophomore Edward Kessen will wrestler for 7th at 138lbs.

Buell and Knous Win, Advance to Quarters: Area Wrestlers Move On
Redskin sophomore Wyatt Buell and senior Jace Knous each won their opening round match-up at the State Wrestling championships to move onto Saturday morning's quarterfinal round. Buell, 175lbs, defeated Ben Logan's Kameron Larson 5-1 in the first round. He will face Woodridge senior Steven Duffy in the quarterfinals. Knous had no trouble in his opener. He defeated Kartyr Armstrong of Warren by a first period fall. He will face senior Elijah Groh of Clinton Massie in the quarters.

Several other area wrestlers advanced to day two action. in Division II, Saint Marys juniors Tate Hisey, 126lbs, and Bo Hertenstein, 150lbs, each advance to the Championship quarterfinals winning by fall. Defiance Junior Mason Ducat won a close 5-4 match to advance to the quarters. Kenton's Anthony Hunt, 157lbs, lost his opening match by a 5-0 decision but rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 5-4 win to move on to day two. Celina Senior Zach Greber lost a tough 3-1 match in sudden victory at 144lbs but rebounded with an 8-2 decision to advance. in Division III, Versailles' 113 pounder Trey Huber lost his opener but bounced back with a major decision to advance. Teamate Michael Osborne, 175lbs, advanced in the Championship round with a 9-0 major decision. Coldwater Senior Austin Hamilton split his matches to move on in the consolation bracket. Delphos St John sophomore Edward Kessen, 138lbs, opened the tournament with a heartbreaking ultimate tiebreaker loss, but won his next consi match 8-3 to stay alive. Allen East freshman Jordan Neal, 144lbs, advanced with an opening round first period pin, while teammate Brogan Paxson split his opening day matches to move on to day two.

Elida Senior Skyler Kirk, 138lbs, dropped his two bouts and was eliminated, as was Versailles' freshman Trent Huber, 106lbs. Allen East senior Trenton Gatchell dropped two close decisions at 157. Columbus Grove teammates Kyle Lathrop, 165lbs, and Loudon Auchmuty, 190lbs, were eliminated on day one.

MS Wrestlers Qualify 8 for OAC State Tournament
Sunday at Vandalia Butler, twelve Redskin Wrestlers competed for a top six District finish and the State qualification that comes with it. Eight wrestlers achieved their goal and qualified for the Ohio Athletic Committee State Tournament. The OAC State Tournament will be held at the Covelli Center in Youngstown on March 16-17.

Buell and Knous Advance to OHSAA DII State Tournament
The streak continues. Sophomore Wyatt Buell and Senior Jace Knous each qualified for next weekend's State Wrestling Tournament, and in doing so, made it 32 consecutive years that one or more Redskins have qualified for the tournament. The top four place winners in each weight class of the Norwalk District will compete at the Schottenstein Center beginning on March 8th.
Buell and Knous each went 4-1 on the weekend and brought home 3rd place finishes. Buell's only loss was to the eventual 175lb champion, Andrew Barford of Columbus St. Francis Desales. Knous's only loss was to another champion Max Shulaw, also of Desales at 215lbs. Senior Reece Schnarre went 3-2 and placed 5th at 165lbs while Sophomore Gavin Ridenhour went 2-3 placing 6th at 132lbs. Other Redskins competing included Freshmen Zane Russell (106, 2-2), Carson Pummell (113, 0-2), Sophomore Brody Presar (190, 2-2), and Juniors Caden Mellot (120, 2-2) and Dawson Ware (157, 1-2).
Other Western Buckeye League wrestlers who qualified for the State Tournament include Saint Marys' Tate Hisey (126) and Bo Hertenstein (150), Defiance's Mason Ducat (132), Elida's Skyler Kirk (138), Celina's Zack Greber (144), and Kenton's Anthony Hunt (157).
Celina's Kenzie Miracle qualified for the State Tournament with a 4th place finish in the 105lb weight class at the Marysville regional.

MS Wrestlers Place 3rd at OAC State Duals

The Wapakoneta Middle School Wrestling Team finished 3rd at the Ohio Athletic Committee State Duals Sunday, held at Olentangy High School. The Redskins defeated Ashland 45-31 in a back and forth match to start the day off. In round 2 the Skins lost to Medina Highland 49-43 in an exciting dual that wasn't decided until the final match. Wapak then had their way with an undermanned Sheridan squad in round 3 before defeating Carrollton 63-24 in the 3rd place match.

Going 4-0 on the day for the Redskins were Graham Moyer and Cooper Cecil. Finishing 3-1 were Brody Bishop, Gauge Vaughn, and Channing Miller.

Next up for the MS Wrestlers is the OAC District Tounament at Vandalia Butler this Sunday.

Redskins Advance 9 to Norwalk District; Team Finishes 3rd
The Wapakoneta High School Wrestling finished 3rd out of at 11 teams at the OHSAA Defiance Sectional. Redskin Wrestlers advancing to next weekend's District Tournament at Norwalk include: Seniors Reece Schnarre and Jace Knous, Juniors Caden Mellott and Dawson Ware, Sophomores Gavin Ridneour, Wyatt Buell, and Brody Presar, and Freshmen Zane Russell and Carson Pummell. The top 4 Placers in each weight class advance.
Knous had no problems cruising to the 215lb Championship. He register two Tech Falls and a Pin on his way to the title. Russell lost a tough championship match to Carter Stuckey of Wauseon to finish runner-up. Mellott dropped his finals match to Napoleon's Alex Gonzalez to finish Runner-up. Mellott has beat Gonzalez twice previously this season. Schnarre, Buell and Ridenour each bounced back from disappointing semi-final matches to take third. Pummell, Ware and Presar, each finished fourth.

Skins Take WBL Title: Set Sights on Post-Season
Saturday, in Kenton, the Redskin Wrestlers were crowned outright Western Buckeye League Champions. Led by six individual Champions, the Skins received contributions from all of its competing wrestlers. Freshman Zane Russell, Junior Caden Mellott, Sophomores Gavin Ridenhour and Wyatt Buell, along with Seniors Reece Schnarre and Jace Knous paced the Redskins by winning their weight class. Sophomore Brody Presar made it to the Championship match and Junior Dawson Ware brought home a 4th place finish.

The Redskins will now set their sights on qualifying for the OHSAA State Tournament. They will travel to Defiance on Saturday for the Sectional Tournament. The top four Placers in each weigh class qualify for the District Tournament. Go Skins!

The Varsity Wrestling Team finishes the WBL dual meet season with a 9-0 record.
The Wapakoneta Wrestling Teams traveled to Celina for the final WBL matchup of the season, and both squads came away with impressive victories. On a night where most of the barnburner matches went the Redskin's way, the middle school matmen knocked off the Bulldogs 42-28 while the varsity defeated the hosts 48-27. With the victories, both squads finish their WBL dual meet season undefeated. They varsity, already clinching the dual meet portion of the WBL Championship, will look to capture an outright WBL title at the league tournament this Saturday at Kenton. The middle school wrestling team will send a contingent to Vandalia Butler to compete in the OAC Districts and an opportunity to qualify for the OAC State Tournament.

Redskins Head to Final WBL Dual Undefeated with Win Over Bath
Both the high school and middle school wrestling squads handled WBL foe Bath on Thursday night setting up the season finale on Tuesday at Celina. The varsity defeated a shorthanded Bath squad 66-15 with only four contested matches. The middle school matmen were able to win six of eight contested matches and went on to post a 71-10 victory.

MS Wrestlers Finish 4th at Elida Invitational
After winning tournament championships at Clyde, Bucyrus and Shawnee, along with a runner-up finish at their own Wapakoneta Invitational, the middle school Wrestling Team could not replicate those performances at Elida. The Redskins finished in 4th place out of the 19 team filed. Crue Shaner (80lbs) and Channing Miller (134lbs) wrestled their way to the top of the podium. Finishing runner-up were Brody Bishop (92lbs) and Darrian Steinbrunner (122lbs).

Redskin Wrestlers Defeat Bulldogs
The Redskin Wrestlers took to the road and traveled to Elida for a league matchup. Both the high school and middle school squads came away victorious. In doing so, both teams remain undefeated in WBL dual meets.

The middle school Wrestlers opened the night with a 59-14 victory and the high school Wrestlers capped it off with a 58-13 victory over the host Bulldogs.
​
The middle school will make the short trip back to Elida on Saturday for their invitational. Wrestling will begin at 10:00 AM at the fieldhouse. Also on Saturday, the high school will travel to Columbus St. Francis Desales to attempt to qualify for the OHSAA State Dual Meet Tournament.

Wrestlers Knock Off Kenton
The high school and middle school Wrestling Teams took to the road Thursday night for a Western Buckeye League match-up with Kenton. Both teams entered the night at less than full strength, but were able to handle the host Wildcats. The high school moved to 6-0 in WBL duals with a 61-18 win and sit atop the league standings.

The middle school Wrestlers also kept their perfect dual meet record intact with a 45-16 win over Kenton.

Redskins Claim Title: Buell Outstanding Wrestler
The high school Wrestling team hosted the Wapakoneta Invitational Saturday and when the dust settled, it was the Redskins who claimed the team title in the 13 team field. Winning individual titles were Zane Russel (106lbs), Wyatt Buell (175lbs), Brody Presar (190lbs) and Jace Knous (215lbs). The hosts edged out runner-up Vandalia Butler who claimed six individual titles.
​
Sophomore Wyatt Buell was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. The 175-pounder went 5-0 on the day with three pins and a pair of decisions. Buell defeated WBL foe Luke Lazarich of Celina 5-0 in the championship match.

Caden Mellot notched his 100th varsity win on his way to runner-up at 120lbs. Mellott placed 6th at last season's State Tournament.

Wrestlers Defeat Shawnee to Remain Unblemished in WBL
The varsity Wrestling took another step towards their WBL championship goal by besting Shawnee on Senior Night. Prior to the match the Redskins recognized their four Seniors, Jace Knous, Jamie Martinez, Reece Schnarre, and Zach Steinke. Once the festivities concluded, the Redskins put on an impressive performance and defeated the Indians 58-14.

Redskin Wrestlers Have Successful Weekend on the Mat
Both the High School and Middle School Wrestling teams put together impressive performances on the mat this weekend. The high school matmen finished with a 7-2 record and 3rd place finish in the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. The Redskins defeated WBL foe Defiance 44-30, Liberty Benton 45-31, Anthony Wayne 61-18, Bucyrus 59-19, Fairview (Sherwood) 69-6, Normandy 68-12, and Versailles 42-30. They were defeated by Genoa 47-26 and Napoleon 42-20. Going undefeated on the weekend for the Skins were Cayden Mellott, Brody Presar, and Wyatt Buell. Complete match results are available here.
The Junior High matmen brought home gold at the Shawnee JH Wrestling Championships. The Redskins finished atop the leader board with 234 points, followed by Versailles with 217 and Defiance with 188 points. Bringing home individual championships were Crue Shaner (80lbs), Hans Sammetinger (98lbs), Gauge Vaughn (128lbs), and Channing Miller (134lbs). Runners-up for the Skins were Brody Bishop (92lbs) and Lane Fisher (142lbs).

Redskins Remain Perfect in WBL Duals After Van Wert Victory
The varsity Wrestling team defeated Van Wert Thursday by a 42-26 margin, keeping them atop the WBL dual meet standings. The Redskins took 8 of 14 matches to defeat the Cougars in front of a nice sized home crowd. Recording wins for Wapak were Zane Russell (106), Caden Mellott (120), Gavin Ridenour (132), Zach Steinke (138), Reece Schnarre (165), Wyatt Buell (175), Brody Presar (190) and Jace Knous (215). The Junior High Wrestlers also defeated the Cougars by a 51-15 margin.
The HS will travel to Napoleon this Friday and Saturday to participate in the Gold Medal Duals. The Middle School Grapplers will travel to Shawnee to compete in the Shawnee Junior High Wrestling Championships.

The Middle School Wrestling team finished Runner-up in their 14-team invitational Saturday. The Redskins were able to put 16 Wrestlers on the podium with 3 individual Champions. Crue Shaner moved his record to 17-0 on the season with 2 pins and a major decision on his way to the title at 80lbs. Bentley Ruck brought home gold at 116lbs by going 5-0 on the day. At 128lbs, Gauge Vaughn pinned his way through 5 matches to take his weight class. Making the Championship match and finishing runner-up for the Redskins were Brody Bishop (92lbs), Hans Sammetinger (98lbs), Cooper Cecil (104lbs), and Darrian Steinbrunner (122lbs). It marks the third year in a row that Versailles has outscored the host Redskins to claim the crown. The Tigers finished the day with 13 total placers including Champions Reece Magoteaux (92lbs), Isaac Batty (122lbs), and Hunter Wise (245lbs).

Redskins Stay Perfect in WBL Duals
The High School and Middle School Wrestling team's records remain unblemished in Western Buckeye League dual meet matches after a sweep of the Roughriders in their home gym. The MS Wrestlers started the night off in dominating fashion by winning 11 of the 13 contested weight classes, all by pin. The HS match was not decided nearly as early as both teams battled tooth and nail. The Redskins would eventually come away with a 42-33 win after winning 8 of 14 matches.
The MS Team will host a 15-team tournament this Saturday at the high school. Wrestling will begin at 9:00AM. Both the MS and HS will host Van Wert on Thursday with wrestling beginning at 5:00PM

The Junior High Wrestling Team came home with a championship trophy Thursday by finishing atop the 21-team field at the Bucyrus Pool Tournament. The Redskins were led by 5 individual Champions. Those finishing on top of the podium and going undefeated on the day included Crue Shaner (80lbs), Brody Bishop (92lbs), Hans Sammetinger (98lbs), and Darrian Steinbrunner (122lbs). Also placing for Wapakoneta were Bentley Ruck (Runner up, 116lbs), Hunter Byrd (Runner up at 172lbs), Gauge Vaughn (3rd at 128lbs), Channing Miller (3rd at 134lbs), Lane Fisher (3rd at 142lbs), Carsyn Seibert (4th at 160lbs), Trevor Varno (5th at 134lbs), Zeke Doseck (6th at 122lbs), and Connor Howe (6th at 128lbs).
Both the High School and Middle School Wrestlers will be in action this Thursday as they travel to Saint Marys to square off against the Roughriders in a key Western Buckeye League matchup.

HS and MS Wrestlers Sweep Tri
The High School and Middle School Wrestling Teams traveled to Indian for a non-league tri-meet between the host Lakers and the Yellow Jackets of Sidney. HS and MS matches were wrestled concurrently on two different mats.
When the dust settled, both squads came away victorious against both of their opponents. The MS grapplers defeated Indian Lake 47-45 in an exciting back and forth match. They also came out on top of Sidney 54-28. The HS matmen knocked off Indian lake in the opener 44-31 and defeated Sidney 55-30.
Both teams will be in action over the Christmas break. The High School competes in the 2-day Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Tournament held at Vandalia Butler on December 27-28. The Middle School travels to Bucyrus for a pool tournament on 28 December.

Just in time for Christmas, wearables purchased through our Lima Sporting Goods Team Store will be available for pickup this Wednesday and Thursday.

Items will be available Wednesday, December 20th, in the Middle School Cafeteria from 5-6PM. Thursday, December 21st will also have items available for pickup. Hours for Thursday will be 6:30-8PM at the Dan Davies Wrestling Complex.

MS Grapplers Bring Home Championship From Clyde
The Middle School Wrestling Team wrestled their way to a first-place finish at the 20 team Larry Norman Memorial MS Wrestling Tournament held at Clyde High School. The championship was a true Team effort as all point earning Wrestlers contributed to the team's point total. The Team was led by individual Champions Crue Shaner (80lbs) and Bentley Ruck (116lbs). Ruck recorder five pins enroute to his Championship.

Redskins Move to 2-0 in WBL
The High School and Middle School Wrestling Teams both improved to 2-0 in dual meets on the season with wins over Ottawa Glandorf on Thursday night. The middle school Wrestlers won five of the seven contested matches and went on to win by a margin of 69-12. For complete MS results, click here.
After a nip and tuck match last week with Defiance, the high school grapplers turned in an impressive performance with a 69-0 shutout over the visiting Titans. Complete HS results are available here.
The MS and HS Wrestlers will both be back in action this Saturday. The MS will be in a tournament at Clyde HS while the HS Wrestlers will be competing at the Coldwater Invitational.

Redskins to Host Ottawa Glandorf in Dual
The High School and Middle School Wrestling Teams will both be back in action this Thursday, at home, against the OG Titans. Both the HS and MS currently have 1-0 dual meet records.

Varsity Wrestlers Compete at Firebird Tournament
The Wapak high school team competed at the Kettering Fairmont tournament on Saturday. Thirteen teams competed in the tournament and the Redskins were able to finish in fourth place, with eight Redskins finishing in the top 4 of their weight class. Caden Mellott (120 pounds) and Wyatt Buell (175 pounds) finished the day as champions of their respective weight class, and Mellott earned tournament Outstanding Wrestler as voted on by coaches.
Other wrestlers were able to gain valuable experience as freshmen. Zane Russell (106) finished in third place, Carson Pummell (113) finished third, and Carter Counotte (120) finished 6th.

Wrestlers Sweep Bulldogs in Season Opener
The Wapak middle school and high school Wrestling Teams both kicked off their 23-24 campaign with victories, albeit in drastically different fashion. The large crowd composed of Redskin and Bulldog faithful, a large contingent of Wapak Kids Wrestlers, and other area Wrestlers, coaches, and fans were treated to an exciting night of action that was certainly worth the price of admission.
Starting the night off, the middle school grapplers jumped out to a 22-0 lead over Defiance and never looked back. The Redskins recorded 8 falls, 1 tech-tall, 1 major decision, and 2 decisions on their way to 63-10 victory. Click here for complete middle school results.
The high school wrestlers were able to pull out the victory in much more dramatic fashion. In an exciting back-and-forth match, the Redskins and Bulldogs finished the dual tied at 39, with each team taking 7 weight classes. Fortunately for the Redskins, two Bulldog forfeits, at 106 and 113, compared to only one for the Redskins, at 285, gave the home team the win on criteria. Click here for complete high school results.

Redskins set to Kick-off the 23-24 Season
After an entirely too long off-season, this week marks the return to the mat for the Wapakoneta Wrestling program. The high school and middle school Wrestlers open at home on Thursday December 7th against Defiance. The Bulldogs are always well coached and should provide for a very competitive match for the host Redskins. The high school will then turn around and head to Kettering Fairmount for the Firebird Classic on Saturday the 9th.
Wapak Kids Wrestling kicks off their 36th season this Sunday competing in a mini-tournament at Dayton Northmont. This year's squad has 92 boys and girls competing in the Miami Valley Kids Wrestling Association. A special Thank You to all of our volunteers that continue to make our program so successful.
