Wapak Kids Finish Out Season at OAC State: Erb and Jackson Place

Fifteen Wapakoneta Wrestlers wrapped up their season this weekend in Youngstown at the Ohio Athletic Committee's Grade School State Tournament. Hope Erb turned in the highest placement for the Skins. She placed 4th in the Girls-D2 108lb weight class. JJ Jackson, competing under the Collin Palmer Wrestling Academy, also made it to the podium turning in a 5th place finish in the Boys-D4 80lb class.          Complete Results​​​

Erb went 3-2 on the day with a fall and and a pair of decisions. Her semifinal loss came at the hands of eventual champion, Jade Adkins of Harrison who pinned her way through the field. Adkins, a sixth grader, placed 4th in last week’s OAC Girls Junior High Tournament. Sixth graders may participate in both the Grade School and Junior High OAC tournaments.

 

Going 4-2 on the weekend, Jackson tallied a tech-fall, a decision, and a pin before dropping his semifinal match to the eventual champion, and the consolation semifinal match. In his match for 5th place, JJ scored the takedown in sudden victory overtime to win by 7-4 decision.
 

Other Wapak boys competing were Jaxson Follin (D1-45lbs 0-2), Wyatt Follin (D2-50lbs), Mylan Webb (D2-50lbs 2-2), Eli Erb (D2-58lbs) 0-2, Zane Allison (D2-65lbs 1-2), Drexler Dobie (D2-70lbs 1-2), Titus Follin (D3-60lbs 0-), Hunter Stidam (D4-80lbs 1-2), Asher Miller (D4-95lbs 3-2), Dorrian Varno (D4-120lbs 0-2), and Landen Friemoth (D4-130lbs -2). In addition to Erb, other female Wapak Wrestlers were Mia Bailey (D1-44lbs 2-2) and Millie Sells (D2-65lbs 1-2).​​​

OHSAA State Tournament qualifiers Gavin Ridenour and Keyno Mendez competed in the Ohio Wrestling Association for Youth State Tournament held at the Marion County fairgrounds. Mendez turned in a 3rd place finish going 4-1 on the day. Ridnehour ended the day 6-2 enroute to a 4th place finish.

Miller 3rd and Shaner 6th at OAC Jr. High State:
Mendez Wins Freshman State

A dozen junior high Wrestlers competed this past weekend in the Ohio Athletic Committee's Junior High State Tournament. Six boys and six girls took to the mats with the boys competing both Saturday and Sunday, and the girls on Sunday only. Eighth graders Crue Shaner and Channing Miller each ended the weekend on the podium. 

Shaner made it back-to-back OAC State placements. As a seventh grader, Crue placed 8th in the 74lb weight class. This year in the 84lb weight class, he moved up two steps on the podium on his way to a 6th place finish. Crue finished the weekend with a 5-3 record. His three losses came at the hands of the the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers.

Miller, who won four matches at last year's tournament, did not let this season's opportunity go to waste. After an opening round bye, he rattled off three consecutive wins, two by tech-fall. Leading 11-8 in his semifinal match, he was caught in a roll thru for a fall to eventual champion John Adams. Miller bounced back with a major decison in his consolation semifinal match. In his finals match, after a scoreless sudden victory overtime, Miller rode out Avery Conroy of Streetsboro 5-4 in the overtime tiebreaker to wrap up 3rd place.

Other Wapakoneta Wrestlers competing were Bennett Bishop, 1-2 at 90lbs, Asher Miller, 0-2 at 96lbs, Cooper Cecil, 2-2 at 120lbs and Darrian Steinbrunner, 2-2 at 132lbs.

On the girls side, Kenize Jackson went 3-2 and missed placement by just one match. Her two losses were to the eventual champion and 3rd Place finishers. She won two matches by decision and one by tech-fall. Also competing for the girls were Bailey Koenig, Brielle Bowers, Brooke Page, Rhilynne Watson, and Carmin Wibley.

Mendez Wins Freshman State

Wapak's Keyno Mendez won the 159lb eight class on Saturday at the OAC Freshman State Tournament. The previous weekend, the freshman competed in the OHSAA State tournament at 150lbs. In the OAC tournament, after a first round bye, Keyno went 4-0 with a decision, a pair of tech-falls and a pin.

Versailles' Kaiser Places Third

Ben Kaiser of Versailles placed third in the 209lb weight class. The 8th grader went 5-1 on the weekend with a pair of pins. His only loss was to the eventual champion Jason Forte of Elder.

Russell and Mellott Make it Onto the Podium

Junior Zane Russell (106) and Senior Caden Mellott (120) each Wrestled their way to the third day of the OHSAA State Tournament and ended up on the podium. The sophomore Russell went 3-2 on his way to a 4th place finish. He lost his semi-finals match to eventual Runner-up Rayce Watson of Jonathan Alder before defeating Anthony Bergeron of Granville in the consolation semifinals in a repeat of last week's district finals match. He dropped his final match 6-2 to senior Justuce Fisher of Beaver Local.

Senior Caden Mellott made his second trip up the podium with a 6th place finish at 120lbs. The ONU bound Wrestler went 3-3 on the weekend losing to eventual Champion Maddox Laymon of Sheridan and 3rd place finisher Josh Sheets of Columbus Desales. In his 5th place match, Mellott fell to Wauseon's Carter Stuckey 7-6.

Juniors Gavin Ridenour and Wyatt Buell each qualified for the State Tournament but did not place. Freshman Keyno Mendez also qualified but dropped both of his State matches. Buell, making his second State appearance, suffered and injury in his first-round loss and forfeited his second-round matchup. Ridenour won his opening match by an 8-6 decision before falling to eventual Runner-up Blake Bartos by fall. In his consolation match, the junior fell to 6th place finisher Luke Stanley of Marlington 5-3.

Kessen is Delphos Saint John's First State Champion

Junior Edward Kessen brought the St. John's Blue Jays their first Wrestling title when he won the divison 3 138lb weight class. Kessen defeated Lima Central Catholic's Antwain Adams in the final by a 7-6 decision. Sunday's match marked the third weekend in a row that the two faced each other in the Championship match. Kessen defeated Adams at the sectional tournament, as well as the district tournament.

Roughrider's Hisey Repeats as State Champion

Saint Marys Memorial's Tate Hisey knocked off presumptive favorite Blake Bartos of Medina Buckeye to make it back-to-back State Titles for the 132lb senior. Hisey wrapped up his senior campaign with a 40-3 record and will continue his Wrestling career at George Mason University.

Indian Lake Puts Trio into Finals

Three Indian Lake Wrestlers advanced to Sunday's Championship Match with all three finishing as Runner-up.  At 215lbs, senior Owen Pummel wrapped up a stellar career with a 2nd place finish. Juniors Chris Timms (285) placed 2nd for the Lakers men, and Maddie Miller (235) placed Runner-up for the Lakers ladies Team.

 

Area Wrestlers Finish on Podium

Several other area grapplers Wrestled their way to a top eight finish and a spot on the podium. Versailles brothers Trent (106) and Trey (113) Huber each turned in strong performances over the three-day tournament. Trent took 8th place while Trey finished in 4th. Corbin Kimmel of Wayne Trace notched a 7th place finish in the Division 3 120lb weight class. LCC had a pair of finalists with Antwain Adams (138) finishing Runner-up and Jordan Neal bringing home the top spot at 144lbs. Thor Etter (144) of Paulding finished in 3rd, and Saint Marys Memorial senior Bo Hertenstein wrapped up his high School career with a 4th place finish at 157.

Redskins Qualify Five for State; Teams Places Runner-up

Five Redskin Wrestlers punched their tickets to the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament by placing in the top four at the DII Norwalk District. Zane Russell (106) and Keyno Mendez (150) were each crowned Champion going 4-0 on the day.​ Senior Caden Mellott, along with juniors Gavin Ridneour, and Wyatt Buell, all finished in third place. The five State Qualifiers ties the Team record set in 1999. The State Tournament is March 7-9 in Columbus at the Schottenstein Center.

MS Wrestlers Win OAC State Duals Title

The middle school Wrestlers competed at the Ohio Athletic Committee's Division II State Duals at Olentangy High School Sunday. The Redskins finished the day 5-0 and were crowned Team Champions. Winning all five of their matches on the day were Fisher Montgomery, Romeo Simmons, and Trey Williams. Going 4-1 on the day were Cruz Mendez, Cooper Cecil, Channing Miller, Trevor Varno, Andre Varno, Caleb Pulfer, and Hank Walters.​            Complete Results

Lawrence Advances to District

Wapakoneta's Eliza Lawrence placed 3rd at Friday's Findlay Sectional, and in doing so, became the school's first female District Qualifier Wrestler. The sophomore 115 pounder, went 3-1 on the day with a pin and a pair of tech-falls to qualify for next week's District tournament which will also be held at Findlay. Freshman Maci Neumeier and and junior Ella Ridenour finished 6th. Also competing for the Redskins were freshmen Kelsey Greve and Skylar Good.

As a Team, Wapakoneta finished 11th in the 25 Team field.

Junior High Boys Qualify Five for OAC State Tournament

​Five Redskin Wrestlers qualified for the Ohio Athletic Committee's State Tournament to be held March 15-16 at Youngstown State's Covelli Center. The top six placers in each weight class from each of eight districts earn automatic qualification for the State event.   Complete Results​

Redskins Looking for Outright WBL Title

​Having closed out the dual meet portion of the Western Buckeye League season with an impressive 9-0 record, Wapakoneta heads into Saturday's WBL team tournament looking for an outright league title. A Team's dual meet portion of the season counts as half of the overall title, and the Team's tournament finish accounts for the other. The tournament begins at 9am Saturday at Ottawa Glandorf.​

Wrestlers Finish WBL Dual Meet Season at 9-0

The varsity Wrestlers wrapped up the dual meet portion of the WBL season Thursday by defeating Bath 62-5. The win moved the grapplers to 9-0 in the league with just the WBL Tournament remaining.​ The Redskins will look to win their 20th WBL Title this Saturday at the WBL Team Tournament at Ottawa Glandorf. MS Wrestlers Go 5-0 at Border War Duals

The MS boys Wrestling Team was crowned Champion at the inaugural Defiance Tri-State Border War Middle School Duals. The Wrestlers defeated Berkshire (IN), Anthony Wayne, Ayersville, and Napoleon in pool action before defeating Celina in the Championship Match.

Versailles Runs Away with Elida Title: Skins Distant Second

Versailles ran away with the 21-Team Elida Invitational Team Championship. The top to bottom depth of the Tigers' lineup saw them place all fourteen of their Wrestlers, including putting eleven into the championship match. Versailles ended the day with seven Champions.

​

Wapakoneta mustered 232.5 point compared to Versailles 311 to finish as Team runner-up. The Redskins placed eleven of their fourteen Wrestlers. They put five into the championship matches with four coming away victorious. Individual Champions included Crue Shaner (92lbs), Cooper Cecil (122lbs), Darrian Steinbrunner (128lbs) and Channing Miller (150lbs). Finishing Runner up was Trevor Varno (160lbs). Isaiah Whetstone finished third at 86lbs. Fourth place finished were turned in by Bennet Bishop (98lbs), Trey Williams (142lbs), Andre Varno (172lbs), and Hank Walters (245lbs). Warren Rivera (205lbs) finished sixth.​

​

The HS and MS will close out their home season with Senior Night this Thursday against Elida.

Another Busy Weekend: Varsity Wins Raider Invitational

Week 8 of competition has wrapped and multiple Redskins found their way to the podium.

​

The Varsity grapplers competed Saturday at the 21 Team Ben Logan Raider Invitational, and walked away with the Championship trophy. The Redskins Place ten of their eleven competitors. 

Freshman Keyno Mendez was selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after pinning returning State Qualifier Braydon Cox of Kenton Ridge to win the 157lb weight class. Other Placers included Champions Zane Russell (106lbs), Urijah Cordray (113lbs), Caden Mellott (126lbs), and Wyatt Buell (175lbs). Runner-up performances were turned in by Gavin Ridenour (132lbs), Lane Fisher (138lbs), and Dawson Ware (165lbs). Gauge Vaughn (144lbs) finished 4th and Johnny Carnes (285lbs) finished in 5th place.     Brackets   Results

Friday the HS girls competed in the Iron Maiden Tournament at Bellefontaine. Saturday was the MS girls turn and two Redskins made the podium. Kenzie Jackson went 3-3 to Place 6th and Brooke Page took 4th after going 3-2.   HS Girls Results       MS Girls Results

The MS boys were a late add to the Friday night Ben Logan Raider Invitational. The MS matmen placed 4th in the 11 Team field. Seven Wrestlers competed, and all seven made the finals. Finishing as Champions were Bennett Bishop (92lbs), Cooper Cecil (122lbs), Darrian Steinbrunner (128lbs), and Channing Miller (150lbs). Wrestlers Remain Undefeated in WBL: Knock off Shawnee

The Wrestlers traveled to Shawnee Thursday night and handled business to remain atop the Western Buckeye League standings. The Varsity Wrestlers defeated the host Indians 63-17. The middle school Wrestlers opened the night in similar fashion with a 57-21 victory.

 

The HS girls will compete Friday & Saturday at the Iron Maiden Tournament in Bellefontaine. The MS girls will compete Saturday at the Iron Maiden. The MS boys will compete Friday at the Ben Logan Raider MS Invitational. The HS Varsity will Wrestle in he Ben Logan Raider Invitational on Saturday, while the JV boys will be at the Vandalia Butler JV Tournament.

Wrestlers Wrap Up Busy Weekend on the Mat

All Redskin Wrestlers were in action this weekend with many turning in impressive performances and all gaining valuable mat time and experience.

The HS and MS girls competed in their first tournament of the season. Eleven Wrestlers took to the mat and three ended up on the podium. Brielle Bowers finished the day 4-2 to take 5th place. Kenzie Jackson went 3-1 to take 3rd, and Carmin Wibley went 4-1 to finish Runner-up.

The MS boys sent a contingent to Shawnee and finished 9th out of 19 Teams. Redskin place winners included Isaiah Whetstone (3rd), Henry Martin (6th), Alton Spangler (5th), Andre Varno (6th), Warren Rivera (4th) and Hank Walters (3rd).   Brackets      Placers

The Varsity opened day 2 of the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals by losing a tough 36-30 match to Versailles. Following the loss, they bounced back to win their next 4 matches. They completed the two day tournament with an 8-1 record, good enough for a Team Runner-up finish. Caden Mellott, Gavin Ridenour, Keyno Mendez, and Wyatt Buell all completed the weekend undefeated.  Results

Varsity Finishes Day 1 of Gold Medal Duals Undefeated

The varsity Wrestlers went 4-0 on the opening day of the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. The Redskins defeated Napoleon 42-31, Genoa 44-26, Tiffin Columbian 59-24, and WBL foe Defiance 48-34.

On Saturday, the Redskins will face off against Versailles, Normandy, Bucyrus, Westerville Central, and Rossford.

Wrestlers Defeat Van Wert

The Wapak Wrestling Teams traveled to Van Wert Thursday and came home with another WBL dual meet victory. The high school defeated the Cougars 54-15, while the middle school grapplers cruised to a 65-23 win. 

The varsity boys Wrestlers will be in action Friday and Saturday at the Napoleon Gold Medal Duals. The Middle School boys will be at Shawnee Saturday for the Junior High Wrestling Championships. Both the high school and middle school lady Wrestlers will compete in a tournament at Patrick Henry on Saturday.​

Redskins Remain Atop Lima Area Rankings

The second Lima Area Wrestling Rankings of the season have been published and the Redskins remain ranked as the number one Team in the area. Sophomore Zane Russell (106), Senior Caden Mellott (120), Junior Gavin Ridenour (132), and Junior Wyatt Buell (175) all remain at the top of their respective weight class. Moving into the top position at 150 is Freshman Keyno Mendez. Other ranked Redskin Wrestlers include Brody Bishop (113), Carson Pummell (126), and Dawson Ware (165). In the girl's rankings, Wapak's Ella Ridenour enters in at 235.

Buell Picks Up Win #100

On Thursday, Redskin junior Wyatt Buell joined elite company by securing his 100th varsity win. In doing so, he becomes the 18th Wapak Wrestler to eclipse the century mark. The returning State Qualifier defeated state ranked Cole Donovan of Saint Marys 4-0 to surpass the 100 win mark. â€‹â€‹
